General Motors !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! both Alcoa Inc. and Novelis Inc. — both of which are aluminum supplying companies — to supply the necessary metal needed for the next-generation !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! and !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! full-size pickups
That's taken from an article on !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , and while they say it won't be until the next generation of full size trucks from GM, no sooner than 2018. Yet GM has also promised that the current generation Silverado-Sierra will get major mid-cycle refreshes throughout their life to keep them up-to-date, which could signal for aluminum body panels coming much sooner than the 3rd generation of each truck.
Ford moves to make their trucks 200-300lbs lighter than the current GM boys (~700lbs lighter than the current F150), this could position GM trucks to be yet again lighter than America's #1 seller by a few hundred pounds; crew cab 4x4 @ 4500lbs?

Time to invest in ALCOA. It's only 11 or so a share, too.

So GM thinks putting the Silverado/Sierra on a diet will translate to 300,000 in increased sales? Good luck guys.

I think it is more so to stay competitive. Current sales may be in a slump because they aren't offering intensives, where as Ford and Ram are unloading their old trucks at slashed prices. GM won't take the sales title from Ford, even with combined Silverado+Sierra, but that isn't their plan either, if it were they wouldn't have the new mid-size trucks which are most definitely going to take sales from the full-size market.

But...but...GMC is professional grade!
Despite me having been to the oil sands and if I can pull percentages out of my ass I'd say a good 75% were using Fords.
But hey, its professional grade. The marketing says so!
